St Aloysius Industrial Training Institute (ITI) hosts Seminar on ‘Standardisation of ITI- Present & Future’
Mangaluru: St Aloysius Industrial Training Institute (SAITI)-Mangaluru, a unit of St Aloysius Institutions run by the Jesuit Priests (Society of Jesus Congregation) having a legacy of hundred and thirty-one years of service, was established in 1981. SAITI is an institution with distinctive academic profile, blending itself in commitment to rural ethos and modern spirit is preparing the rural youth for the modern challenges of today. It’s a giant step towards empowering rural youth by training them with job oriented trades. In Conformity with the regulation of the Directorate General of Employment and training (D.G.E.T) under the ministry of labour, St Aloysius ITI is training the students in the technical field ever since it started in 1981, is now permanently affiliated to NCVT new Delhi, Govt.of India of Karnataka with grant in aid.
St Aloysius I.T.I. is rendering quality training to its students and makes them self reliant in various fields at per with industrial requirements. Training is given in 9 different trades of one year or two years duration. After the successful completion of training in the relevant trade, the trainee is eligible for appearing the All India Trade Test (AITT) conducted by NCVT and is awarded the National Trade Certificate (NTC) from the Government of India. This Certificate is valid and Gives preference in getting service during the placement in the National and International Companies. In addition to these, since last two years SAITI has launched two Skill Development Centres, partnering with two renowned companies, namely Hyundai Company ; and Arvind Motors-Mangaluru- and the third Skill Development Centre was launched recently in association with Jaquar Group (a multi-diversified bathroom solutions brand).
ITI education plays a key role in fulfilling man power needs in the technical field in India as well as in the world. With the Government’s vision of developing India as the global technical manpower hub, ITI education has come into the limelight and door of opportunities has opened up for Industrial training Institutes. There is a need for ITIs to upgrade themselves to match the current times to better harness the opportunities available and thus contribute to nation building by skilling our youth. In this connection, St Aloysius ITI had organised a one day seminar for the Principals and Training Officers of private ITIs of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on the topic “Standardisation of ITI-Present & Future”. Directors and Principals of other states also had participated. This seminar became an excellent platform to identify and discuss the challenges faced by ITIs and how to overcome them
The seminar was inaugurated by chief guest- Vinod Kulkarni- Head-CSR-TATA Motors by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- Fr Dionysius Vaz- Rector, St Aloysius Institutions, who presided over the function; and guests of honor- Dr Joseph Stanley- General Secretary-SKIP; Bro Thomas- Ex-Chairman-SKIP; Fr Dr Leo D’souza- Former Director-St Aloysius ITI; Bro PT Thomas-Regional Secretary-SKIP; Syed Amanulla -Former Deputy Director, Dept of Employment and Training-Govt of Karnataka, & also a resource person of the seminar; Fr Eric Mathias Sj-Director, St Aloysius ITI; and Vincent Mendonsa- Principal-St Aloysius ITI.
Fr Eric Mathias Sj in his welcome address extended his heartfelt thanks to all those who have supported St Aloysius ITI, and further said, “Collaboration is one of the core values at St Aloysius Institutions. We believe in collaboration. We have named our new conference room as “SAMIPYA”, which means closeness or nearness, closeness with the divinity and fellow beings.” Prior to the inauguration, the state-of-art seminar/conference hall ” Samipya” the programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song by Wilson- Junior training Officer at SAITI, followed by a scintillating classical welcome dance performed by the students of SAITI Sewing Technology. The seminar began with the inauguration of newly constructed well equipped conference room ‘Samipya’ by Rev Dr Leo D’souza SJ, former Director of the institution. The conference room was blessed by Rev Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions.
The Chief Guest Vinod Kulkarni inaugurating the seminar said, “Collaboration is a must in today’s world. Competition is good, but the collaboration is far better. Today, even the industries collaborate with each other and get mutually benefited. St Aloysius ITI has taken the right step in this direction, by organising this seminar. By collaboration, every one can grow together.” The main resource person of the Seminar, Mr Syed Amanulla, Former Deputy Director, Department of Employment & Training, Govt of Karnataka was felicitated during the inaugural programme for receiving the “National Brand Ambassador for Vocational Training-2014” award from Government of India.
In His Presidential Address, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions Rev Fr Dionysius Vaz SJ Said, “As a carpenter sharpens his saw teeth regularly, It is very necessary to sharpen our knowledge and skills. Otherwise, we would become stagnant and in no time would be outdated. We have to rise up to the new challenges and always strive to give the best to the students and society.” The other dignitaries on the dais were Dr Joseph Stanley, General secretary, SKIP; Bro.Thomas- Former Chairman, SKIP and Bro. P.T. Joseph, Regional Secretary, SKIP.
Sessions in the seminar: The first session of the seminar was about “What are the expectations of industries from ITIs?”. Various studies suggest that the root cause of the problem of unemployment is the miss-match between the skill sets possessed by prospective candidates and the industrial requirements. In an honest attempt to address this issue, industry people were invited to share their opinion about ITIs and their requirements. Mr Venugopal-Manager HR & Admin, M/s Selco Solar Light Pvt ltd, Bangalore; Vinod shetti- Workshop Manager, M/s MCF, Mangalore and Jaideep Rai, AGM,M/s Mandovi Motors had been the speakers. After their presentation, the participants interacted with them.
The second session on “ Upgradation of ITIs to suit industrial requirements and employment opportunities” and third session on “How to change the attitude of general public towards ITI?” were conducted by Mr Syed Amanulla, Former Deputy Director, D.E.T, Govt of Karnataka who himself is an example how ITI education can be the stepping stone for success. He after doing his ITI course in fitter trade, continued his education to become graduate Engineer and then M.B.A. In the final session, there was a panel discussion on “Problems faced by ITIs”, where the heads of institutions shared the problems and made an attempt to find the feasible and effective solutions.
The valedictory of the programme commenced by a hymn sung by Wilson N, Junior training officer of the institution. Chief Guest of the programme Mr Syed Amanulla said, “I feel very much honoured and happy to be a part of this excellent seminar. May this seminar inspire us to think innovatively and inspire us to take ITI training to the higher level”. Conveners of the seminar Roshan Dsouza and Robin Vas were felicitated during the programme. Certificates of participation were distributed to the participants.
Rev Fr Eric Mathias SJ, Director of the institution delivered his Presidential Address and said, “I feel proud to have organised this seminar which I believed has benefited every one. We believe in working together in team and are ready to share our facilities with other institutions. You can bring your students and/or conduct seminars in our newly inaugurated state of the art Conference Room ‘SAMIPYA’. May the collaboration we have with each other benefit our student ”. Mrs Flavia Dsouza-Training officer, SDM ITI, Vamanjoor and Naveen Kumar K.S.-Principal, B.A. ITI, Tumbe shared their opinions about the seminar on behalf of the participants and expressed their gratitude for organising the fruitful seminar. Vincent Mendonsa, Principal proposed vote of thanks. Robin Vas conducted the proceedings of the seminar. The seminar concluded by singing National anthem.
